Be Dingo-Smart!
Dingoes on Fraser Island are wild animals!
Enjoy their beauty but keep your distance!
Always stay with your Children!
About Dingoes
Dingoes Canis lupus dingo are wild dogs introduced to Australia from Asia at least 4000 years ago. Dingoes are related closely to domestic dogs but have some biological differences. For instance, dingoes breed once a year; dogs breed twice. Dingoes live in small groups (packs) in a home range (territory) and often howl in chorus. They live for about 10 years, may start breeding at about two years and produce up to six pups in spring.
Are Fraser island dingoes really wild?
Yes, the island's 160 or so dingoes are wild. They are hunters and natural scavengers, eating anything from insects to wallabies, hunting alone or in groups. Fraser's dingoes are understood to be among the purest strain of dingo in eastern Australia, having rarely interbred with domestic dogs. This makes Fraser Island special for conserving the dingo species.
Why do they look skinny and hungry?
Do not be fooled by how a dingo looks and behaves. A healthy dingo naturally looks lean, like a greyhound. Like all scavengers, dingoes are always looking for food - in nature, smaller mammals and birds, but they prefer food that comes more easily -- from people and around campsites.
What happens to dingoes if people feed them?
When dingoes are fed or scavenge rubbish, they often lose their hunting skills and start to depend on scraps and hand-outs. They also lose their natural fear of humans and expect food from everybody.
Dingoes visit campsites, picnic areas, resorts and residential areas, follow people and tear open tents looking for food. pups from these dingoes are not taught to hunt; instead they grow up scavenging from these areas, are no longer wary of people and often become aggressive. They have bitten visitors particularly children, occasionally quite severely. Sadly these dingoes are then killed by Rangers -- for habits taught to them by people.
How to be Dingo-Smart!
Be safe -- make sure everyone in your group follows these simple rules.
Always stay close to your children
Many children are scared by dingoes. Some have been bitten by dingoes wanting food or excited by children's movements. Whenever a dingo is around, watch your children carefully -- dingoes move fast!
Walk in small groups
Occasionally people walking alone have been threatened by dingoes. Stay in small groups.
Watch dingoes quietly; don't encourage or excite them
Do not try to attract dingoes for photos, call or splash them, throw things or run near them. These behaviours excite dingoes and they may threaten you or other visitors by growling, nipping or biting.
Look out for dingoes -- stay calm don't run
Dingoes sometimes chase joggers or children playing. Make sure you and your children know what to do if a dingo approaches you. Stand up, face the dingo (if in pairs stand back to back), calmly back away, and confidently call to an adult nearby. Do not run or wave your arms as this will excite the dingo and make it more likely to chase you.
NEVER feed dingoes
Resist the urge to feed dingoes because they look hungry or because you want to photograph them. Feeding encourages dingoes to become annoying pests instead of attractive wildlife. You could be attacked by aggressive dingoes when you stop feeding (they usually want more!). You will be breaking the law and can be fined. Feeding dingoes is cruel and dangerous!
Lock up your food stores
Dingoes will chew or tear anything when looking for food, and can even open iceboxes! Keep food in strong, lockable containers and keep iceboxes and picnic lunches in your vehicle until you need them. Take special care at Lake McKenzie -- dingoes often snatch picnics and personal belongings.
Pack away your food scraps
Dingoes are attracted by food scraps and smells. Clean all dishes and barbecue plates and immediately put rubbish bags in bins or vehicles. If you keep food scraps in tents, in the bush or hanging from trees, dingoes, goannas or crows will find them!
Keep fish and bait off the ground
Store fish and bait in shoulder bags or vehicles, not in beach buckets. Bury fish remains at least elbow deep (about 30cm), well below the high tide mark.
Make your tent boring for dingoes -- keep your belongings safe
In some areas, dingoes rip closed tents looking for food, and carry off shoes, sleeping bags or other items (they love expensive brands!). Keep your camping gear and personal items in locked boxes or your vehicle. Around Lake McKenzie and Central Station especially, leave your tent open with the flaps tied back, so dingoes can see there is nothing to take.
Tell others how to be Dingo-Smart!
If you see other visitors feed or encourage dingoes or leave food around, tell them what you know. They are doing the wrong thing, but you or your family might get hurt.
Fraser Island's dingoes are some of eastern Australia's last wild dingoes.
Coming face to face with a dingo can be a treasured memory -- but not if someone gets scared or hurt!
By being Dingo-Smart! you can help dingoes remain one of Fraser Island's natural treasures
In the past some dingoes have been destroyed -- because other visitors have not always been Dingo-Smart! Dingoes around campsites have learnt to scavenge for food, expecting hand outs from visitors or stealing from picnic tables and tents. In their continual search for food, dingoes might harass you or your child, or attack your tent.
